Translate an article

Semantic allows you to translate a complete article into another language using AI. The translation preserves the article's structure, formatting, and media.

Start a translation

  1. From the editor, click on the Translate button in the header.
  2. Select the target language from the dropdown menu.
  3. Choose the translation mode:
    - Translate into a clone: creates a copy of the article with translated content. The original article is not modified. The clone opens in a new tab.
    - Translate in place: replaces the current article's content with the translation. The article's language is updated.
  4. Click on the corresponding button.
  5. The AI translates the content. A loading screen with animated messages appears during processing.

What is translated

  • The SEO title (headline)
  • The excerpt (description)
  • The editorial brief
  • All text blocks: paragraphs, titles, quotes, lists, FAQ
  • Media captions and credits (images, videos, audios)
  • Gallery captions
  • Titles of related article blocks

What is not translated

  • URLs (links, embeds, iframes)
  • Code and Markdown blocks
  • Embed and oembed blocks (YouTube, Vimeo, TikTok, etc.)
  • Media IDs and technical data

Translation rules

The AI adheres to several rules to ensure quality:

  • Structure Preservation: the article's JSON format is preserved identically, only the text is translated.
  • Maintained Formatting: bold, italics, links, abbreviations, and all inline formatting are preserved.
  • Capitalization Rules: the AI respects conventions of the target language (e.g., in French, only the first word of a title is capitalized).
  • Tone and Style: the original's register and style are maintained.

Tips

  • Use ‘Translate into a clone’ to preserve the original and compare versions.
  • Review the translation: AI produces a quality translation, but human review is always recommended for nuances specific to your field.
  • Set up canonical URLs and hreflang after translation to indicate to search engines the different linguistic versions of the article. Consult the canonical URLs and hreflang guide.
